Abstract [en]

This thesis will investigate the possibility to develop an equation to calculate the discharge time for DC-cables of different lengths to make it easier to determine when it is desirable to equip the cables with dedicated discharge resistances. When the sum of cell capacitors have discharged to the same voltage level as the DC-cable the energy stored in the cable will discharge through the cell capacitors discharge resistances at the same time as the remaining energy stored in the cells. The equation is developed and validated by calculating different simulated cases and comparing the results. The time it takes for the DC-voltage to reach a factor  of its initial value is given by the following equation.

The equation is only valid when the DC-resistance is zero and with the HVDC configuration symmetrical monopole.
