Abstract [en]

Background: Previous research shows that patients experience well-being when the nurse has worked to see the person behind the patient. Patients and their relatives feel that it is important for the nurse to be present and communicate with them as it provides security. Purpose: Describe nurses' experiences of person-centered care. Method: A systematic literature study with descriptive synthesis has been used and the result is based on ten qualitative health science articles. Results: Nurses feel that person-centered care means getting to know the person behind the disease and having a holistic view. They highlight patient and family involvement as an important part. Nurses also feel that a supportive environment favors person-centered care. They describe lack of time and lack of communication in the team as reasons why they cannot work person-centered. Conclusion: The nurses feel that by getting to know the patient, they can create a trusting relationship. They feel that they need to create participation and involve the patient in the care. However, the nurses experience a lack of time, that they do not always have the lead with them and that communication in the team affects their opportunities to be able to care for the person's needs in focus.
