Title: THE REAL ESTATE OCCUPATION – AN UNCERTAIN INDUSTRY. A qualitative study of what motivates real estate agents to remain in the profession

Tutor: Eva Lindell

Keywords: Motivation, intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, motivational factors, monetary rewards, non-monetary rewards

Research questions:

-        How do real estate agents describe their extrinsic motivation factors?

-        How do real estate agents describe their intrinsic motivation factors?

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to contribute with increased knowledge about what motivates real estate agents to stay in the profession despite an inadequate working environment, fierce competition and the risk of no pay.

Method:” In order to answer the questions of the study, a qualitative method has been performed. Qualitative interviews with six real estate agents were conducted.

Conclusion: The real estate agents experience differences in their work motivation depending on how long they have worked in the industry. The less experienced real estate agents need support and security to stay in the profession and develop. The more experienced real estate agents are not justified as much as before, and thus need a change in their salary conditions. All real estate agents need more freedom.
