Abstract [en]

Title: The analytical role of the controller - Digitizing and change in the analytical role of the controller

Research questions: How does the controller work with analysis of an organization in the public sector? What impact does digitization have on the controller´s ability to analyze                                     the organization?

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how digitization affects the role of the controller as an analyst in the public sector.

Method: The method used in this thesis is a qualitative study that is based on an abductive research approach. The data is collected from semi-structured interviews with 12 controllers.

Conclusion: A large part of the role of the controller in the public sector involves analysis, but at the same time the controller is subjected to great time pressure and does not always have the opportunity to perform the necessary analysis work. Digitization cannot replace the controller’s analysis as it is too complex, but on the other hand, it can streamline other parts of the controller’s work, which eases up the workload for the controller to spend more time on his or her role as an analyst.

Contribution: The study serves as an empirical contribution to research regarding the impact of digitization on the analytical role of controllers and deeper understanding of adaptation of this in the public sector.
