Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to investigate how budget- and debt councelors constructions of indebted women and men interact with concepts such as dependence, independence and gender. Previous research shows that welfare-professionals construct men and women differently and that men and women as a result of this are offered help based on these constructions. This study aims to enlighten this from a context of indebtedness. The study has been conducted with the help of semi-structured interviews with a total of 6 budget- and debt councelors. Vignettes was used as a helping tool. The result of the study shows that budget and debt councelors unconsciously attribute indebted women characteristics of being dependent of aid and support from welfare. These constructions appear to be the unconscious as the budget- and debt councelors state that they treat indebted men and women equally regardless of gender. One conclusion from the result is that budget- and debt councelors need to be aware of that working strictly from a “gender blind” perspective risks reproducing traditional gender roles.
