Abstract [en]

Abstract

This report is based on case study made at GKN Driveline’s prototype division. The study examines the opportunities and hurdles presented by implementing an ERP-system. The study was completed at GKN’s facility in Köping by observing and participating in the daily work. The observations were supported by a literature review to solidify the results.

The purpose of this project was to analyze the use of ERP-systems by answering a series of research questions.

  • Which factors are essential for effective use of an ERP-system?
  • Is it more appropriate to adapt your organization to house a system, or to adapt a system to complement your organization?
  • How is an implementation project for an ERP-system best managed for success?

The conclusions that have been made in this report all relate to the questions asked, and such contain answers to how to best use and implement a ERP-system. The main knowledge gained in this report is the importance of not underestimating the complexity of ERP-systems.

Implementing a ERP-system is one of the most difficult projects a company can undertake and as such they must take careful consideration and a lot of planning to execute the project to satisfaction. Due to the difficulty to use the system many users need a great deal of training and education to use the system satisfactory. ERP-systems often take many years to completely install in an organization which means that the projects require a lot of commitment from management to succeed.
