Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how characteristics on individual level affects team performance.
Method: This thesis is based on surveys and an experiment. An experiment was chosen due to the nature of the subject and the possibility to acquire complex data. Also using a survey gives both objective and subjective data.
Conclusion: Team characteristics motivation to lead and participatory leadership was found to be positively related to network centrality. Leadership processes was positively related to density. For team characteristics, having several team members with coordinator role was found to be positively related to network centrality. Cooperation was positively related to density. Density was not found to be related to team performance. Network centrality was positively related to team performance. Hence, some team and leadership characteristics were related to shared leadership. Shared leadership had a negative effect on team performance.
