Att uppleva och bearbeta sorg
Mälardalen University, Department of Social Sciences.
2007 (Swedish)Student thesisAlternative title
To experience and recover from grief (English)
Abstract [sv]

Key words: grief, loss, coping, grief recovery method.

Abstract [en]

Two studies were carried out in order to examine the way in which people experience and recover from grief, and also to try to establish what makes grief recovery successful. Another purpose of Study 2 was to examine a concrete grief recovery method. In Study 1 15 students participated. Study 2 included 308 course participants at the Swedish Institute of Grief Recovery. Study 1 showed that three core components of grief could be established: (1) the cause is loss, (2) the reaction is negative emotions, (3) the grief is continuing. The results of Study 1 also showed that grief recovery can occur by taking action and/or by adjusting to the situation. The result of Study 2 showed that the courses of the Swedish Institute of Grief Recovery (Sw. Svenska Institutet för Sorgbearbetning) have a positive effect on grief. The effects included a sense of relief, an improved emotional connection to the object of grief, and a greater knowledge of grief. In addition, the results demonstrated that the method works irrespective of the type of loss suffered.

Key words: grief, loss, coping, grief recovery method.
