Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This qualitative study aims to broaden the understanding of, and knowledge about, the way youth-counsellors interpret and apprehend mental health of adolescents and their experiences of meeting with adolescents. Semi structured interviews with youth-counsellors of different occupations, dealing with adolescents, were carried out. The results show that youth-counsellors encounter both poor and good mental health among the adolescents they meet. When young people suffer from poor mental health it shows in a multitude of ways, for example; stress and anxiety. Ways of coping vary between individuals. Some seek out help on their own, some need the support of others and some develop negative behavioural patterns. Results show that youth-counsellors can support adolescents with poor mental health by having open dialogs, taking preventive actions and cooperating with other authorities. Youth-counsellors observe that poor mental health does not protrude in different ways regardless of sex but that girls tend to seek out help more often than boys. According to the results of this study, the work done by youth counsellors overall still needs development. Also, the pre-emptive work with reducing mental health problems of adolescents needs to be developed within their profession.
