Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Research has shown that several young Alpine skiers suffer from musculoskeletal injuries while attending a sports high-school. Bodily changes during adolescence make them more prone to damage. Understanding how these young people experience the rehabilitation process while attending a sports high-school is important in order to facilitate optimal rehabilitation.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine how young alpine skiers attending a sports high-school experience the rehabilitation process and the collaboration with a physiotherapist on distance, parallel with studies and elite training.

Method: Five students attending an Alpine skiing high-school were recruited through convenience sampling. Two boys and three girls were interviewed. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, and qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach was used.

Result: The analysis resulted in eight subcategories divided into three categories; environmental influence, healthcare factors, and individual factors in relation to the rehabilitation process.

Conclusion: The participants gained confidence in the physiotherapists who individualized the rehabilitation and took into consideration the individual's environment. Engagement from the physiotherapist and short distance to the physiotherapist was perceived positively for the rehabilitation process. Social support was representative prominent environmental factor. The companionship and social support varied depending on whether the participants were in school or in their hometown. The participants perceived that they developed their self-regulation and coping strategies based on experiences from previous rehabilitation processes.
