Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Abstract

Integration is a concept that can be defined in different ways. In this study, we examine the process of integration for unaccompanied refugee children from the perspective of professionals in residential care homes (HVB-hem) and schools. Through semi-structured interviews with three caregivers in various residential care homes and three school counselors, we studied: which methods residential care homes and schools use to help unaccompanied refugee children manage their everyday life and manage their studies in school, what works well and less well in their work with unaccompanied refugee children and which opportunities for improvements there is concerning the methods used in the work with unaccompanied refugee children. In the study, we have concluded that the integration of the unaccompanied refugee children is mostly affected by their well-being, stability, occupation and comprehensibility about their situation. The study also showed that residential care homes and schools serve different functions. Leisure activities and education are two important factors for children's integration process. The study shows that children with these activities can learn the Swedish language, make contacts, gain increased comprehension and knowledge of the community.
