Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study aims to describe and evaluate the autoethnographic method. The central question of the study is whether autoethnography is useful in sociological research. The autoethnographic method is a controversial method that has been accused of being postmodern, relativistic and devoid of scientific basis. The evaluation shows that some of the criticism directed at the introspective and artful studies takes place on good grounds. Furthermore, the evaluation shows that the criticism related to the fact that autoethnographic studies would contradict scientific principles in many ways can be handled by autoethnographic researchers. In summary, the essay shows that autoethnography with its epiphany focus is useful in sociology. I claim that the method can contribute with knowledge in primarily emotional sociological research.
