Abstract [en]

This thesis considers a simple way of simulating a ram-air parachute in flight. As of today the parachute industry is rather old fashioned regarding the design process of new parachutes. The interviewed manufacturers in this thesis both highly rely on experience when designing new prototypes. Before a prototype reaches the desired characteristics of that particular parachute, many revisions of the prototype have often been manufactured in vain. To avoid many of these prototypes, thoughts lead to, that perhaps, some kind of computational tool could help rid some of these early prototypes. As a start of dealing with this challenge, two programs was written in MATLAB™, the first less complex than the second. A parachute along with lines and a pilot was considered a rigid body. This enabled a simplified first view of the problem. With a base in newton’s second law, through discretization, a simulation of the system’s motion was possible. The results of the second, more improved program, was quite satisfying considering the scope of this thesis. The second program is surely a solid basis for further improvement. Improved to the sufficient extent, it will, without doubt, be a powerful tool in the hands of a designer.
