Towards using Success Factors as Indicators of Performance in Product Development Projects

Abstract [en]

Today’s managers and decision makers are not satisfied with the way they are currently measuring performance in innovation and product development projects. It is argued in this paper that there is a need for performance measurements that can evaluate the current state of the development projects in order to be able to identify important areas that need improvements. In order to achieve that success factors for product development are used as a foundation for the performance evaluation. Success factors and performance measurements have on their own triggered a lot of research, especially within the innovation and product development management literature. However, there is little research focusing on combining success factors and performance measurements in the context of product development. In this paper Product Development (PD) Watch is introduced as way of integrating important success factors as a foundation for measuring performance during the development of a new product. This is done through a web-based survey to be completed once a week by all the participants in a development project. PD Watch contains a given set of questions and is design in a manner that makes it very time efficient to complete. Typically, it takes less then a minute to complete. Based on the longitudinal data collected and focus on success factors, improvement actions can be identified and acted upon in a proactive manner. Moreover, since the survey is conducted every week, feedback on the perceived effect of improvement actions is also given. In this paper the first results and experiences from using this tool in two industrial product development projects within the automation industry are presented.
