Abstract [en]

The rate of immigration in European countries has increased over the past decade. Sweden has seen a significant rise in its immigrant population with most people coming from Africa, Middle East, and Asia. Upon settling in Sweden, some of these immigrants end up starting businesses of their own. The new businesses either experience success or failure depending on how their leaders approach different issues. This study focuses on how leadership results in success to immigrant owned startups in Sweden. To collect the relevant data and information, a series of six interviews with immigrant new venture leaders in Sweden was done to find out the leadership factors that result in success. The findings of the study were that motivation of employees; employing a transactional leadership style; leaders being both friendly and professional in their relationships with employees; being proactive in management of a business; and being open, honest, and engaging in ethical business activities were the leadership factors that could result in success in new ventures owned and operated by immigrants.
