Title: Generational Motivation: A qualitative study, searching the driving factors of Generation Y’s job satisfaction, and their eager to frequently change employment
Tutor: Konstantin Lampou
Keywords: Job Satisfaction, Generation Y, Frequently Job Changing, Motivation & Hygiene Factors.
Research 1. For Generation Y, are there any specific motivational and hygiene questions: factors that are contributing to job satisfaction/dissatisfaction?
What specific factors contribute to the occurrence wanting to change job repeatedly?
Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate if job dissatisfaction is one of the driving factors for Swedish Generation Y changing jobs regularly, or if other aspects - such as flexibility, free time or traveling - are more influential when deciding to change or terminate employment. In order to seek this possible relationship, a qualitative investigation regarding what factors are influencing Swedish Gen Y's job satisfaction and dissatisfaction will be undertaken; to see which factor, in its presence or absence, makes the millennial dissatisfied, and if it drives them to change jobs.
Method: In order to answer the research question, the abductive study was conducted through 10 qualitative in-dept interviews. The sample was collected by purposive sampling, to make sure that all the respondents were full-time employees belonging to Generation Y.
Conclusion: The respondents showed that most of the hygiene factors directly affect the feeling of satisfaction, rather than directly affecting the dissatisfaction when the hygiene factors are missing, as stated in the Herzberg model. Important factors established for satisfaction was relation to co-workers, salary and advancement. A common reason for Generation Y to change jobs is due to the strong negotiation position they are portraying when approaching a new employer, which will immensely help them increase their wages.
