Abstract [en]

Abstract The democratic process in Myanmar has been very complex and troublesome. Since Myanmar's way to democratization the country has witnessed an intense ethnic conflict between the Rohingya and the Government which led to one of the largest refugee crisis in the world. Several of the Rohingya minority has fled to the neighbouring country Bangladesh, due to the restrictions of human rights and political rights.

This essay analyses the democratic process in Myanmar by measuring education, media freedom and how political governance is established within the parliament. Furthermore, this essay thoroughly examines how problematic laws are established. The method used is a mixed method which is a combination of quantitative method and qualitative method using both qualitative and quantitative data which this essay is based on.

The main theory used in this essay is Robert Dahl's theory about polyarchy. The theory is based upon 5 democratic requirements and 7 institutions.

The research question of the essay is whether Myanmar is moving towards democratic development and how well established democratic values are according to Dahl's theory about Polyarchy.

Key words: Myanmar, Dahl polyarchy, Myanmar's democratic development, Democracy, Media freedom, Journalist in Myanmar, Education.
