Abstract [en]

The globalisation of manufacturing activities has led to the emergence of internationally dispersed manufacturing plants. Coordination of such networks is a complex task and entails several management challenges. The purpose of this paper is to increase the understanding regarding the coordination issues and how they could be managed in IMN environment. Using a multiple case study approach, data from three multi–plant manufacturing businesses were collected and analysed. The results include discussions on coordination aspects such as autonomy and mechanisms to conduct coordination. Furthermore, a model for assigning autonomy level to the plant in an IMN is suggested as well as mechanisms to conduct the coordination work.

Abstract [en]

The growth of research interest in networked production has brought up numerous important concepts aimed at production networks. Still the actual research object seems to be ambiguous, making the exact application of findings insufficient. It appears that there are two main notions of the term Production Network. The first meaning is derived by a single versus a multi-organizational perspective while the second meaning comes from a regional versus global view. Obviously indistinctness exists in this field of research and clarification of terms and concept is required. The objective of this paper is to give an overview of the existing theories in accordance with the industrial practice providing a model to bridge the academic theories to industrial practice.

Abstract [en]

Management of production plants on global scale adds diverse challenges to those normally faced within national borders. A constant challenge is to achieve the most efficient network configuration via robust design of production systems. A case study is conducted where commonalities among production plants of a global manufacturing company have been studied in regard to the design of production system within global production networks. The results show three synergetic areas through the global production network. Standardization levels of production system constituents have been also discussed.

Abstract [en]

Flexibility of manufacturing systems, as a key factor of survival in the market, is regarded as the ability of handling changes in variants and volume governed by different capabilities depending on system level and manufacturing process. Research on flexibility has been of interest over years, resulting in a vast field of organizational, technical, and process-based enablers. The practical review in terms of needs, enablers and implementations of changeable production systems is however scarce. The objective of this paper is to present an initial review of industrial practice regarding flexibility in manufacturing systems, based on the current frame of reference and empirical study of two manufacturing companies in Sweden which helps industrial companies to identify their flexibility needs and the required enablers to achieve them.

Abstract [en]

The current fierce competition within the manufacturing industry throughout the world is a result of globalisation and dynamic changes in the market. This new era within the production world requires shorter lead times, integrated logistics, capabilities regarding handling changes in product volumes and variety, as well as conformity to environmental rules and regulations legislated by governments and organizations. Apparently, the multitude of variables needed to solve problems complicates the decision-making process. In order to provide solutions for complex problem solving within production development which include many variables and a certain amount of uncertainty there is a need for robust decision making tools. Discrete-event simulation (DES) is one of the virtual tools that can be used as a support for decision-making for production related problems. The current paper addresses challenges which cause low utilization of DES in industry along with a framework for handling those challenges and performing DES projects in an effective and efficient way.

Abstract [en]

Purpose: This paper aims to provide a holistic view to support the choice of appropriate strategy for conducting a knowledge transfer (KT) project in an international manufacturing network(IMN) environment. It proposes a model that includes multiple aspects of a KT project along with guidelines on each aspect. Design/methodology/approach: To achieve the research goals, multiple case study method was adopted. Data have been collected by conducting semi-structured interviews regarding five KT projects in three multinational corporations. Data were triangulated by means of comparisons to complementary data acquired through observations and archival documents. Findings: The results of this paper detail the key issues of five KT projects. Furthermore, the paper proposes an aggregated model comprising the main aspects and strategies for a KT project within an IMN. Research limitations/implications: Despite the abundant research on KT area, not many research projects provide holistic views on KT process. The focus has rather been sectional and concentrated on each specific aspect within the KT. Practical implications: The paper guides practitioners to identify multiple aspects in KT that will eventually increase the odds for successfully performing such projects. Originality/value: The proposed learning network model improves the performance of KT projects by providing a holistic view including several factors that the organization should emphasize to succeed with inter-plant KT.
